Frey to Earth Fest: Glenn Frey is known for his signature work in the Eagles and a solo career that includes the hits "Smuggler's Blues" and "The Heat Is On." Frey comes to Boston tomorrow for the annual WBOS-FM Earth Day Festival at the Hatch Shell. He'll perform with journeymen rock/R&B act Max Carl & the Big Dance, the first band on Frey's new label, Mission Records.

"I've known Max for a long time," Frey says of Carl, who previously sang for Jack Mack & the Heart Attack and .38 Special. "And it's doubly special, because the Earth Day Fest is such a meaningful event."

Frey and his manager, Peter Lopez, started the new label, which also hopes to release Latin records in the future. ''We want to be a diverse label,'' says Frey, who also hopes to release his own solo disc next year and eventually perform again with the Eagles.

Tomorrow, Frey joins an Earth Day lineup that has Paula Cole, Marc Cohn, Abra Moore, 10,000 Maniacs, Dog's Eye View, Chantal Kreviazuk, Edwin McCain, and Matthew Ryan. There will also be nearly 100 environmental exhibitors. After his appearance, Frey will fly to Palm Beach, Fla., to perform with Joe Walsh in a private party for the CVS pharmacy chain.

"I chuckled at the idea of doing something for CVS," says Frey, a onetime wild man who now is domesticated with two young children. "It's a good thing they didn't hire us 20 years ago. We'd be asking for something besides money."
